The SENS Foundation:  Founded to develop, promote and ensure widespread access to regenerative medicine solutions to the disabilities and diseases of aging.
Their focus is the Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence (SENS) identified by their Chief Science Officer, Dr Aubrey de Grey, and combining direct research efforts with education, affiliation and outreach programs.

Calico: Calico is an independent R&D biotech company established in 2013 by Google Inc. and Arthur D. Levinson with the goal of combating aging and associated diseases. The name Calico is shorthand for California Life Company Calico's mission is to harness advanced technologies to increase understanding of the biology that controls lifespan. They will use that knowledge to devise interventions that enable people to lead longer and healthier lives. Executing on this mission will require an unprecedented level of interdisciplinary effort and a long-term focus for which fortunately due to the relationship adequate funding is clearly already in place. In my opinion Calico might well prove to be a game changer.

Human Longevity Incis a genomics and cell therapy-based diagnostic and therapeutic company. Using advances in genomic sequencing, the human microbiome, proteomics, informatics, computing, and cell therapy technologies, HLI is building the world’s most comprehensive database on human genotypes and phenotypes to tackle the diseases associated with aging-related human biological decline. HLI is also leading the development of cell-based therapeutics to address age-related decline in endogenous stem cell function. HLI is concentrating on cancer, diabetes and obesity, heart and liver diseases, and dementia.

The Methuselah Foundation: Their goal is to significantly extend health human lifespan. Instead of accepting the physical and mental losses associated with aging the foundation actively looks for answers and solutions. Not for one disease but for the general loss of functionality and productivity that we all experience. They are a catalyst for progress - seeking, supporting and rewarding science that extends healthy lifespan.

Immortality Institute: The Immortality Institute ( is an international, not-for-profit, membership-based organization ("501-3-c status" in the United States).

Its mission is "to conquer the blight of involuntary death".

To advance this mission, aims to provide, among other things:

  • a repository of high-quality information,
  • an open public forum for the free exchange of information and views,
  • an infrastructure to support community projects and initiatives, and
  • the facilities for supporting an international community of those with an interest in life extension. This site has lots of useful information and is an educational resource on the science of aging

Maximum Life Foundation:
David Kekich is the President/CEO of the Maximum Life Foundation that focuses on aging research. In 1999, he realized the inevitability that science will someday control the human aging process. He understood human beings will someday be able to enjoy very long health spans by studying aging research, the root cause of most deadly diseases. The problem?  He was in a race against the clock. He was faced with the possibility of being part of the “last generation to suffer from heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s and other aging related diseases”.  His solution was to further that aging research and hopefully move it forward by establishing the Maximum Life Foundation. This site is an interesting source and well worth a visit.

Kurzweil AI: Great site about cutting edge technology which has over one million readers.. Ray Kurzweil has been described as “the restless genius” by the Wall Street Journal, and “the ultimate thinking machine” by Forbes.   Inc. magazine ranked him #8 among entrepreneurs in the United States, calling him the “rightful heir to Thomas Edison,” and PBS included Ray as one of 16 “revolutionaries who made America,” along with other inventors of the past two centuries.

Ray was the principal developer of the first CCD flat-bed scanner, the first omni-font optical character recognition, the first print-to-speech reading machine for the blind, the first text-to-speech synthesizer, the first music synthesizer capable of recreating the grand piano and other orchestral instruments, and the first commercially marketed large-vocabulary speech recognition.

Among Ray’s many honors, he is the recipient of the $500,000 MIT-Lemelson Prize, the world's largest for innovation. In 1999, he received the National Medal of Technology, the nation's highest honor in technology, from President Clinton in a White House ceremony. And in 2002, he was inducted into the National Inventor's Hall of Fame , established by the US Patent Office.

He has received nineteen honorary Doctorates and honors from three U.S. presidents.

Ray has also written six books, four of which have been national best sellers.  The Age of Spiritual Machines has been translated into 9 languages and was the #1 best selling book on Amazon in science.  Ray’s latest book, The Singularity is Near, was a New York Times best seller, and has been the #1 book on Amazon in both science and philosophy. He is also author of Transcend  which he has co written with Terry Grossman MD.

The ten fallacies used to oppose curing aging This is worth a look because if you involved in the war on aging you will have heard them all before but my answers might be useful in putting people who oppose us on the right path and addressing their misconceptions!

Recommended Books

There are a lot of books which are relevant to the war on aging but the titles below I feel are the must have titles for anyone who is seriously interested in the subject.

Long for This World:
The Strange Science of Immortality
by Jonathan Weiner

  • Hardcover: 320 pages
  • Publisher: Ecco; 1 edition (June 22, 2010)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0060765364

I greatly enjoyed this book and read it during a three week trip to Bermuda. I classify this as a beach read - at least that is where I read it - because it is a relaxed easy and fun book but at the same time a perfect introduction to longevity research. It is also a great primer for anyone interested in getting to know the work of Aubrey de Grey because the Pulitzer Prize–winning science writer Jonathan Weiner examines his work objectively and in some depth. The book does not just look at Aubrey de Grey but also examines numerous areas of cutting-edge research into anti aging medicine. I feel this is a first rate precursor before moving onto Ending Aging.

Ending Aging:
by Aubrey de Grey and Michael Rae

The book examines the Rejuvenation Breakthroughs That Could Reverse Human Aging in Our Lifetime.

My opinion is that this book might well be a rather daunting read for most people who don't already have some interest or understanding regarding cell biology or molecular chemistry. I would recommend it as a title to read if you enjoyed Long for This World: The Strange Science of Immortality by Jonathan Weiner. Ending Aging is not a book for the beach unlike Long for This World but it is a must have if you really want to know the main details of SENS as proposed by Aubrey de Grey. What you might find interesting is that although ending aging was written 13 years ago much that was purely theoretical then is a reality now such as senescent cell removal, transferring mitochondial DNA into the nucleus of the cell etc.

by Ray Kurzweil and Terry Grossman MD

This book is another one which I highly recommend and another book and found it very well written and enjoyable. It is a pretty hefty read but a worthwhile one. It approaches the subject of aging from a very different angle to Aubrey de Grey. The interesting aspect of this book is that is provides an easy-to-follow program to help you transcend the boundaries of your genetic legacy and live long enough to live forever!

Transcend: Nine Steps to Living Well Forever presents a practical, enjoyable program to help you live long enough (and remain healthy long enough) to take full advantage of the biotech and nanotech advances that have already begun and will be occurring at an accelerating pace during the next few decades.

Here are the nine steps that can help you improve your quality of health and elongate your life:

*Talk with your doctor
*Calorie reduction
*New technologies

I feel that this insightful, well-researched book can help you begin preparing for a technologically-advanced, happy and healthy future. It also means you can be proactive while waiting for science to yield the requisite therapies. I have also read the predecessor to this book Fanatastic Voyage and implemented many of the suggestions regarding diet, excercise, supplementation and nutrition and the results have been very significant.
